Google’s AI mistakenly attributes celebrity appearances to Bezos family funeral

August 26, 2025

Google’s AI overview system recently stirred controversy by erroneously claiming that celebrities were part of the Bezos family funeral. The system falsely reported that rapper Eminem performed and that Elon Musk was present, events that simply did not occur.

Jacklyn Bezos, who passed away on August 14 at the age of 78 after a battle with Lewy body dementia, was laid to rest in a private ceremony at Caballero Rivero Westchester funeral home in West Miami. Only close family members were in attendance, but online rumours began to swirl even before the service took place.

A site with the dubious name ‘BBCmovie.cc’ fueled the confusion by alleging that the funeral featured an Eminem performance along with an emotional tribute from Musk. The story even included fabricated, AI-generated images of Musk offering comfort—none of which reflected the reality of the day.

Google has since revised its AI-generated overview, ensuring that the report now accurately reflects the events, stating that Jacklyn Bezos was surrounded by her family at her Miami home. While the company stands by the overall usefulness of its tool, this incident highlights that even reliable systems can occasionally generate misleading information.

If you’ve ever grappled with unexpected inaccuracies online, this is a reminder to double-check sources and remain alert. As AI tools become a bigger part of our news consumption, striking a balance between innovation and accuracy remains essential.
