AI Steps into the Newsroom: Italy’s Bold Move in Journalism

March 21, 2025

Imagine a newspaper where every article you read, every headline you see, is crafted by artificial intelligence. That’s exactly what Italy’s Il Foglio is doing, taking a leap into the future by letting AI handle all its content for an entire month. This daring experiment has caught the attention of many, sparking both curiosity and a bit of concern.

Why now? Well, we’re living in a time when democracy seems a bit shaky. The latest Democracy Index suggests that constitutional norms are on unstable ground after a whirlwind of global elections in 2024. Despite this, journalism stands strong as a pillar of stability, though now it faces a new challenge: AI.

Claudio Cerasa, the Editor-in-chief at Il Foglio, sees this as a partnership. Journalists ask the questions, and AI delivers the answers. But, as with any new venture, there are a few bumps in the road. Issues like inconsistent AI spellings and unusual listicle formats have raised some eyebrows.

The AI-generated content hasn’t yet transformed storytelling, but it does highlight the crucial role human editors play in refining and polishing AI’s work. As this experiment unfolds, it’s a reminder of both the exciting potential and the challenges of bringing AI into the newsroom.
