Alibaba’s Quark has made quite the transformation, evolving from a simple cloud storage and search tool into what many are calling an ‘AI super assistant.’ This change has catapulted it to the forefront of artificial intelligence applications in China, overtaking ByteDance’s Doubao. It’s a remarkable leap that’s caught the attention of millions of users.
Back in March, Quark secured the top spot among Chinese AI applications, boasting an impressive nearly 150 million monthly active users (MAUs) worldwide. This achievement places it ahead of ByteDance’s Doubao and DeepSeek, which have around 100 million and 77 million users, respectively. These figures come from Aicpb.com, a reliable source for tracking AI product popularity.
Alibaba Group, which owns the South China Morning Post, has shared that Quark’s user base spreads across both mobile and desktop platforms, totaling 200 million users in all. However, they haven’t broken down exactly how these users are distributed between the platforms. The data gathered by Aicpb.com includes analytics from Apple and Google app stores globally, as well as various Chinese Android stores, but it doesn’t account for direct website interactions with the chatbots.
Interestingly, a separate analysis by the US venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz ranked Quark as the sixth most popular AI app globally by MAUs. It trails behind Baidu’s AI Search, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Microsoft’s AI-enhanced Edge browser, which speaks volumes about its growing influence.
