Apple is stepping up its coding tools by teaming up with Anthropic to integrate smart AI features into Xcode. This collaboration aims to bring Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet model into play, helping developers write, edit, and test code more efficiently. Right now, Apple is quietly testing the updated Xcode, with no public release date in sight.
The new setup allows you to interact with Xcode through a chat interface—whether you’re submitting code requests, running UI tests, or fixing bugs. Although Apple hasn’t shared any official comments, Anthropic is keeping details under wraps for the moment.
This isn’t Apple’s first foray into AI-enhanced coding. Even Microsoft has acknowledged using AI to generate much of its code. Apple unveiled a tool called “Swift Assist” at its 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference, yet another effort to catch up in the competitive AI coding landscape. This partnership with Anthropic might just give Apple the edge it needs.
It’s also interesting to note that Apple’s struggles with enhancing Siri seem to be prompting a strategic shift—leadership for Siri has moved from AI chief John Giannandrea to Mike Rockwell. Meanwhile, in a related move on the broader tech stage, OpenAI is eyeing a US $3 billion acquisition for the coding tool Windsurf, a deal that could significantly bolster ChatGPT’s coding capabilities.
