Taiwan Hosts Global Chip Leaders Amidst U.S. Tariff Concerns at Computex

May 19, 2025

This week, Taiwan is the centre stage for the global semiconductor industry as top chip makers gather for Computex. Led by Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang, who is set to deliver a keynote, the event promises fresh perspectives on challenges like U.S. tariffs and ongoing supply chain issues.

Taiwan’s role is more than significant—it’s pivotal. As a key producer of advanced semiconductors powering everything from smartphones to high-performance AI servers, the island has secured its position as a vital nexus in the modern tech landscape. Huang’s comments in Taipei hinted at forthcoming collaborations and innovations, keeping expectations high.

Alongside Nvidia, tech heavyweights such as Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Foxconn will share their insights on integrating AI into everyday devices and autonomous technologies. According to industry experts, Computex offers a rare glimpse into the next frontier of AI development which is increasingly transforming our digital world.

It’s clear that concerns over U.S. tariffs loom large. With the U.S. launching a national security probe into semiconductor imports, many companies tread carefully when addressing the issue. In response, Taiwan is boosting U.S. investments to counter a potential 32% tariff, although there remain worries over losing its strategic ‘silicon shield’ in the tense geopolitical arena with China.

Investment news from Taiwan is equally compelling. TSMC, the nation’s chipmaking giant, plans a major $100 billion investment in the U.S., adding to an earlier $65 billion commitment. Similarly, GlobalWafers, a key TSMC supplier, recently revealed a $4 billion expansion of its Texas operations, signalling robust confidence in the future of semiconductor manufacturing.

Even with these challenges, Jensen Huang remains upbeat about Taiwan’s technological future. “There are so many smart companies here,” he remarked confidently, reinforcing the island’s enduring influence in global tech innovation.
