PREDICT-6G is set to change the way we think about network reliability for precision remote robotics. If you’ve ever struggled with frustrating delays or dropped connections, this project offers a practical route toward more dependable, streamlined communication.
The approach is both smart and accessible. PREDICT-6G weaves together ethernet, cellular, and WiFi into one logical overlay, ensuring that data flows smoothly—just like connecting a well-planned railway, a neatly managed road network, and flexible country lanes. At its core is a Multi-Domain Multi-technology data plane (MDP), which acts as a sturdy backbone by merging various access technologies. It guarantees that every packet reaches its destination, even if the route spans different network types.
This integration is guided by the IETF Deterministic Networking (DetNet) framework, which works like an express service to make sure high-priority data gets through on time. Think of it as ensuring that a train never gets bogged down at a busy junction or that a parcel always arrives on schedule. Each network—whether it’s the highly predictable wired Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN), the more variable WiFi, or the adaptable 3GPP cellular—has been tuned to meet these stringent timing requirements.
Wired TSN is already up to the task, using standards such as IEEE 802.1Qbv for scheduling and Frame Replication and Elimination for Reliability (FRER) to keep things running smoothly. In contrast, WiFi needs some fine-tuning—like introducing Restricted Target Wake Time (rTWT) and scheduled channel access—to curb its inherent unpredictability. Similarly, 3GPP networks, which are typically built on best-effort principles, can be adjusted for determinism with smart radio resource allocation and TSN-Translators that bridge different network domains.
At the helm is the AI-driven Control Plane (AICP), a management system that oversees the entire network, ensuring that data takes the best possible route and arrives precisely when needed. By using AI, machine learning, and Digital Twins, the AICP simplifies complex network views and makes quick, informed decisions about route planning and resource allocation.
For industries where every second counts—like performing remote surgeries or managing automated manufacturing—this blend of diverse access technologies and intelligent management offers practical, real-world benefits. It not only addresses the current limitations of network delays and dropouts, but also paves the way for safer, more efficient remote operations.
By uniting proven technologies with fresh, data-driven strategies, PREDICT-6G helps reduce the uncertainty that can disrupt critical operations. It’s a solution designed with you in mind—using technology that’s approachable, reliable, and finely tuned to the demands of tomorrow’s connected environments.
