AI Innovations in Healthcare: iPATH’s Pioneering Approach to Qualitative Data Analysis

March 20, 2025

In a groundbreaking move to push the boundaries of healthcare research, the iPATH team is diving into how artificial intelligence can transform the way we analyze qualitative data. This exciting initiative, part of an NIH Collaboratory Trial, was recently highlighted in the AcademyHealth Blog.

At the helm of this effort is Dr. Sara Singer from Stanford University. Her team is implementing a strategy that could change how type 2 diabetes is managed across various health centers, including those in California, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Puerto Rico. The first step in this ambitious study involves conducting case studies at 12 health centers to identify the organizational factors that impact the effectiveness of diabetes care.

These case studies have gathered an impressive 170 hours of qualitative data, providing a rich resource for analysis. The team is exploring how AI tools, especially large language models, can simplify the often daunting tasks of transcription, coding, and data analysis.

This innovative approach is backed by funding from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, highlighting the critical role of technology in advancing minority health care.
