ChatGPT’s New Memory Feature: A Game Changer for Users

April 11, 2025

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is getting a major upgrade, and it’s pretty exciting. Imagine a chatbot that doesn’t just respond to your questions but actually remembers your past conversations. That’s exactly what’s happening now. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, has shared that ChatGPT is stepping up its game by utilizing past interactions to offer a more personalized experience. It’s all about creating AI that understands you better over time.

This new feature builds on the ‘Memory’ function introduced last year, which let ChatGPT remember basic details like your queries and prompts. Now, with long-term memory, the chatbot can recall information in two main ways: through ‘saved memories’ that you specifically ask it to remember, and by referencing past chat history to improve future interactions.

Right now, this update is gradually being rolled out. If you’re a Pro subscriber, paying $200 a month, you’re first in line. But don’t worry if you’re not—$20 Plus subscribers will get access soon, and OpenAI plans to expand this feature to Team, Enterprise, and Edu users in the coming weeks. However, if you’re in the EU, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein, you’ll have to wait a bit longer due to strict AI regulations.

For those who prefer a bit more privacy, the memory feature is optional. You can easily disable saved memories in the personalization settings or opt for a temporary chat mode for those one-off queries that you’d rather not store.

This development is similar to what Google did with its Gemini AI back in February, where they also introduced memory capabilities for more personalized responses.
