CJ ENM, a respected name in South Korea’s entertainment scene, is making a bold move into artificial intelligence with its first fully AI-generated animation series, ‘Cat Biggie.’ Launched during the 2025 CJ ENM Culture Talk in Seoul—a celebration marking the company’s 30th anniversary—this project is set to integrate AI into every phase of content creation.
At the Culture Talk, held under the banner ‘K-Content Meets AI: How AI Technology is Transforming the Future of the K-Content Industry,’ CJ ENM outlined its strategy to use AI from planning and production right through to distribution and marketing. As Shin Keun-sup, the company’s chief strategy officer, put it, “We are applying AI across the entire content value chain to expand AI content production across genres and formats. This allows us to secure next-generation IP.”
Known for the Oscar-winning ‘Parasite,’ the company has unveiled two innovative AI systems. The first, Cinematic AI, is designed to handle narrative content by seamlessly blending image, video, sound, and voice while automating the 3D character and environment creation process. The second, the AI Script system, analyses consumer trends and market data to identify promising properties, demonstrating a nuanced understanding of literary language and handling cross-lingual data unlike conventional AI tools.
‘Cat Biggie’ is CJ ENM’s debut fully AI-produced project. This non-verbal, short-form animation series tells the endearing tale of a cat that unexpectedly becomes the caretaker of a baby chick, spread across 30 two-minute episodes. Remarkably, a team of six specialists completed the series in just five months—a timeline that rivals traditional 3D animations, which can take three to four months for a five-minute project.
Baek Hyun-jung, head of AI business and production, explained, “The key challenge was controlling and expressing the unique, dynamic movements in animation. We used our tool, Cinematic AI, to convert the characters into 3D data and fine-tune our production system.” The series is set to premiere globally on YouTube this July.
Looking forward, CJ ENM plans to advance its AI capabilities in film and drama, aiming to establish itself as a global AI studio through expanded teams and creator development programmes. This initiative comes at a time when industry conversations are intensifying around the potential and challenges of AI, including the need for clear industry guidelines and copyright frameworks.
For anyone invested in the evolution of Korean culture and technology, CJ ENM’s strategy offers a reassuring blend of creative storytelling and smart technological innovation.
