Denver Invites AI Innovators to Transform City Services

April 5, 2025

Denver is stepping into the future by embracing artificial intelligence to boost city operations. The city’s Department of Technology Services is on the lookout for top-notch AI vendors through a request for proposals (RFP). The goal? To build a prequalified pool of partners who can bring fresh, innovative AI solutions to improve government efficiency and enhance life for residents.

Suma Nallapati, Denver’s Chief Information Officer, highlights the importance of having a reliable list of AI vendors. She says, “When you’ve got a curated, responsive, and responsible AI vendor bench, you can speed up project rollouts and cut down on costs. It’s all about fostering innovation and ensuring we’re in sync with the city and mayor’s goals.”

The RFP has laid out several criteria for picking the right vendors, focusing on technical skills, potential for innovation, security compliance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. If you’re interested, make sure to get your proposal in by April 15.

Since stepping into her role, Nallapati has been all about tech solutions that put people first and make a positive impact on residents. Her approach to exploring generative AI responsibly is a team effort with industry experts.

Security is a big deal, too. Denver’s Chief Information Security Officer, Merlin Namuth, points out that AI can both boost security monitoring and pose new risks. Striking the right balance is crucial as the city moves forward with AI.

Denver isn’t alone in this journey. Other cities are also setting up AI vendor pools to streamline partnerships with the private sector. Christopher Jordan from the National League of Cities talks about the perks of these initiatives, emphasizing the need for trusted partners to keep innovation and community values in check.

On a broader scale, California is expanding its tech classifications to allow a wider range of IT services through approved channels, making the process more efficient.

Denver’s forward-thinking approach aims to leverage AI for better city services while keeping community values and security at the forefront. It’s an exciting time for innovation and collaboration.
