Finding the Right Balance: How AI Dashcams Are Shaping Trucking

March 18, 2025

The trucking world is on the brink of a major transformation with the rise of AI-powered dashcams. These gadgets promise to make the roads safer and trucking operations smoother. But, let’s be honest, they also bring up some serious questions about privacy—something that affects not just drivers, but everyone on the road.

So, what exactly do these AI dashcams do? Well, they’re pretty smart. They use advanced computer vision to spot risky driving habits. With both inward and outward-facing cameras, they can catch rolling stops, unsafe lane changes, and even potential crashes. They’re also on the lookout for driver fatigue, distractions, seatbelt issues, and smoking, boasting detection accuracy between 88% and 99.5%.

Take FusionSite Services as an example. This waste management company fitted their 800-vehicle fleet with Motive’s AI dashcams. The result? An impressive 89% drop in accidents and a 92% reduction in unsafe driving behaviors. That’s a big win for safety.

But, with these benefits come valid privacy concerns. For many truck drivers, their vehicle is like a second home. The idea of being constantly watched can be unsettling. Plus, the outward-facing cameras might record people without their consent, leading to worries about data breaches and misuse of footage.

To tackle these concerns, Motive offers some thoughtful features. There’s a Driver Privacy Mode that lets drivers turn off the inward-facing camera when they’re off duty. They also use blurring technology to protect the privacy of anyone caught on camera.

Of course, the legal and ethical landscape is a bit tricky. In California, AI dashcams are fine by state laws, but in Illinois, there’s a lawsuit against Samsara’s dashcams for allegedly violating the Biometric Information Privacy Act by storing facial scans without consent.

Finding the right balance between safety and privacy means having clear rules on how cameras are used, recording only when necessary, and ensuring data security is top-notch. It’s crucial to have open communication and training for both management and drivers to respect these boundaries.

As AI dashcams continue to evolve, it’s vital for everyone involved to work together on guidelines that protect privacy while taking advantage of the safety benefits. The future of trucking safety hinges on getting this balance right.
