Florida’s New Bill Aims to Keep AI in Check for Insurance Decisions

March 26, 2025

Hey there! If you’ve ever had to deal with insurance claims, you know how frustrating it can be when things don’t go your way. Well, there’s some interesting news coming out of Florida that could impact how insurance companies handle your claims in the future. Florida lawmakers are considering a bill, Senate Bill 794, that would require human oversight for insurance claim decisions, rather than leaving it all up to artificial intelligence (AI).

Robert Norberg, an insurance expert from Arden Insurance in Lantana, is all for it. He believes this move adds a valuable layer of consumer protection. ‘It gives another layer of protection for consumers,’ he says. ‘If your claim is denied, it has to be relooked at by a human person that is licensed or specializes in claims. So from that aspect, it’s a great consumer protection type of thing.’

Right now, insurance companies use AI mainly for risk assessment. They gather data from past claims and various handbooks to make informed decisions. As Norberg mentions, ‘They’re collecting data from all previous claims. They’re collecting data from all handbooks, all that data is out there.’

This bill has already passed the Senate’s Banking and Insurance committee, which is a significant step forward. If it becomes law, it could mean that whenever AI denies a claim, a qualified human professional will have the final say. This could make a big difference for consumers like you and me, ensuring that decisions are fair and well-considered.
