Groq has taken an exciting step in broadening its global reach with the launch of its first European data centre in Helsinki, in collaboration with Equinix. This new facility leverages the region’s renewable energy and cool climate, positioning Groq to meet the rising demand for AI services across Europe.
Backed by investments from Samsung and Cisco and currently valued at $2.8 billion, Groq is known for its distinctive chip—the language processing unit (LPU)—designed specifically for AI inferencing. Unlike training, inferencing uses pre-trained models to process live data, much like how a chatbot responds in real time.
The Nordic region has become a hotspot for data centres, thanks to its sustainable energy resources and favourable climate. European policymakers are also calling for “sovereign AI,” pushing for local data centres that deliver faster services and easier regulatory compliance.
At the new centre, Groq’s LPUs will integrate seamlessly with Equinix’s interconnection platform, which links various cloud services including Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud. This setup offers businesses a flexible, multi-vendor approach to scaling their AI operations.
With existing facilities in the U.S., Canada, and Saudi Arabia, Groq continues to expand its technological footprint.
