How AI Could Change the Game in Boxing: A Look at Technology’s Impact

April 9, 2025

At the University of Bradford, experts are exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) might transform the sport of boxing. This Tuesday, an intriguing panel discussion will take place right in the boxing ring at the university’s Unique Fitness gym. Spearheading this conversation is Dr. Kamran Mahroof, who heads the MSc in Applied AI and Data Analytics program. He’s enthusiastic about AI’s potential to make boxing both safer and fairer. “AI can give us insights into a fighter’s performance that go beyond what we can see with our eyes,” he explained. Imagine AI helping judges make more accurate decisions, analyzing opponents, and even spotting possible injuries.

Dr. Mahroof posed an interesting question: “If a fighter has an aggressive style and takes a lot of hits, especially to the head, how many headshots is he taking in a match? What does that mean for his career over time? Could AI help us advise fighters about the long-term risks of their fighting style?”

Joining the discussion is Tasif Khan, a professional boxer from Bradford. As a boxing enthusiast, Khan brings a unique perspective. “As a fan, you crave that excitement—the kind that keeps you on the edge of your seat,” he said. However, Khan is concerned that removing human judgment could take away some of the sport’s thrill. “People still debate past fights—who really won? Could AI erase those debates?” Despite these concerns, Khan sees the benefits of AI in enhancing safety, which he fully supports. “Health and safety should be a priority in all sports, so I’m all for it,” he affirmed.
