How AI is Changing Arizona’s Workforce and Firefighting

April 2, 2025

Artificial intelligence is making waves in industries all over, and Arizona is right at the center of this transformation. Companies like Waymo and TSMC are leading the charge, showing just how versatile AI can be. One area where AI is making a big impact is firefighting. Arizona Public Service (APS) is using drones and high-tech cameras to keep an eye on the forests, looking out for wildfires. These tools use infrared sensors and satellite images to spot trouble early.

Even with all this tech, humans are still essential. People are needed to interpret smoke signals and keep watch from towers. APS is working closely with forestry officials and the U.S. Forest Service to make sure everything runs smoothly. Of course, there are some concerns about AI taking on a bigger role. Firefighter unions are on board with AI cameras, but they’re a bit wary about drones flying without pilots, especially when there are human-piloted aircraft around.

As Falko Kuester, a professor at UC San Diego, puts it, “There’s always gonna be a person… The AI will never be like, ‘Send three engines.’” But as AI gets smarter, it could start making decisions that are even safer and more efficient than what humans can do. In Germany, for example, Silvanet is using solar-powered sensors to catch fires right when they start, alerting authorities faster than traditional methods. This really shows how AI could change how we respond to emergencies.

AI’s influence isn’t just in firefighting, though. Recently, Microsoft’s Bill Gates stirred up some debate by suggesting AI might replace many jobs. While there’s some skepticism, experts like New York Times columnist Kevin Roose agree that AI is set to bring “world-shaking change.” Arizona is a great example of this shift. Phoenix is becoming a hotspot for self-driving cars, and TSMC is pouring billions into automated factories. Although some criticize these developments, experts argue that the labor costs in these highly automated settings are quite low.

The rise of AI reminds us of past technological shifts, like how ATMs evolved from “TV banking” to the teller-free systems we use today. As AI continues to weave into our daily lives, its full impact is yet to be seen. But there’s no denying its potential to reshape industries and boost efficiency.
