Meta amps up AI ambitions with top OpenAI researchers

July 17, 2025

Meta is boosting its AI capabilities by recruiting two standout researchers from OpenAI. Wired reports that Jason Wei will join Meta’s cutting-edge Superintelligence Lab, with Hyung Won Chung also on board. Their OpenAI Slack profiles have been disabled, signalling that their transition is already underway.

This move is part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s strategy to drive the company closer to achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). Known for offering competitive compensation, Zuckerberg seems determined to attract and retain elite tech talent. Wei, who has previously worked on o3 and deep research models at OpenAI after his chain-of-thought work at Google, brings a wealth of expertise. Chung, a former colleague of Wei at Google, has made significant contributions to OpenAI’s o1 model and reasoning research. Their long-established working relationship could well be the spark Meta needs to further its innovative edge.
