Meta’s Rapid Expansion: Erecting Tent-Based Data Centers to Accelerate AI Development

July 16, 2025

Meta, under Mark Zuckerberg’s leadership, is rapidly pushing the boundaries of superintelligence technology. In an effort to enhance its AI capabilities, the company has been recruiting top researchers while also opting for an unconventional approach. Instead of waiting for permanent construction, Meta is setting up temporary, tent-based data centers as a stopgap measure while building its massive Hyperion facility, which is expected to deliver up to 5 gigawatts of compute power.

This pragmatic strategy is clearly aimed at keeping pace with AI peers such as OpenAI, xAI, and Google. A report from SemiAnalysis captures the sentiment perfectly: “This design isn’t about beauty or redundancy. It’s about getting compute online fast!” Meanwhile, Meta’s spokesperson Ashley Gabriel shared that the Hyperion center in Louisiana is targeting a 2-gigawatt capacity by 2030.
