Microsoft has revealed plans to trim up to 9,000 roles across several divisions—a move that highlights the company’s push to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving tech market. Although details on the exact teams remain vague, there are strong hints that even the Xbox gaming unit could be affected.
This decision comes as part of broader organisational changes aimed at streamlining operations. The cut represents about 4% of Microsoft’s global workforce of 228,000, following previous rounds of reductions, including the 6,000-job cut earlier this year. In Washington state alone, more than 800 of these roles will be concentrated in key hubs like Redmond and Bellevue.
Simultaneously, Microsoft is doubling down on artificial intelligence by investing $80 billion in expanding its datacentres for training advanced AI models. With British AI expert Mustafa Suleyman now at the helm of its AI division, the company is betting that the next half-century will be defined by intelligent technologies. Even as tensions with partners like OpenAI surface, Microsoft remains committed to driving change and optimising future workplace interactions.
