Mental health services can be expensive and sometimes carry a stigma, so it’s no surprise that many people are turning to AI tools like ChatGPT for guidance. While these platforms offer quick support, they also come with risks—from instances of AI-induced psychosis to other concerning mental health outcomes. Dr Ingrid Clayton, a practising clinical psychologist and author, reminds us that AI is no substitute for traditional therapy. “There are nuances, attachment needs, and emotional dynamics only a human connection can address,” she says. For example, some people use AI to review texts from dating apps or emotionally charged messages, spotting patterns like emotional unavailability that mirror themes discussed in therapy sessions. Others employ AI tools to help manage stress in real time through nervous system regulation techniques.

However, relying solely on AI can lead to problems. “Your bot doesn’t know your history or trauma,” Clayton warns. Without the context of your personal experiences, AI might misinterpret subtle emotional cues.

Think of AI as a tool in your self-care kit—much like journaling or doing a quick online search. It’s useful for gaining perspective, but it shouldn’t be your only resource. When asking for help, be specific. Request detailed, actionable advice, such as a grounding exercise, rather than broad suggestions.

It’s also wise to avoid becoming overly dependent on an AI for emotional support. Although these platforms can mimic empathy with reassuring language, they aren’t a replacement for professional mental health care. If something in the conversation strikes a chord—whether positive or worrisome—it’s best to bring it up with a trusted therapist.

Remember, in crisis situations, AI isn’t equipped to deal with emergencies such as suicidal ideation. In those moments, reaching out to a human therapist or calling a crisis line is absolutely essential.
