OpenAI is set to redefine AI infrastructure with a bold new project in Abu Dhabi—a sprawling 5-gigawatt data centre covering 10 square miles. This facility, comparable in power to five nuclear reactors and larger than Monaco, is poised to become a landmark in the world of AI development.
The project is a joint effort with Abu Dhabi’s tech heavyweight G42, forming a key element of the Stargate initiative. Launched in January alongside partners SoftBank and Oracle, the initiative focuses on building state-of-the-art data centres equipped with high-performance chips for advanced AI research. While the first campus in Abilene, Texas, is expected to reach 1.2 gigawatts, the Abu Dhabi venture will more than quadruple that capacity.
This development comes at a time when AI collaborations between the U.S. and UAE are gaining momentum, despite some concerns in legislative circles. OpenAI began its UAE ties in 2023 following its partnership with G42—a move aimed at boosting AI integration across the Middle East. During a visit to Abu Dhabi, CEO Sam Altman highlighted the country’s early embrace of AI, noting that the UAE had been talking about the technology long before it hit the mainstream.
However, the collaboration isn’t without its complexities. G42, founded in 2018 and led by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan—the UAE national security advisor and brother to the nation’s ruler—has faced scrutiny. In late 2023, U.S. officials raised alarms that Chinese entities might access technology via G42, given its past connections to firms like Huawei. Responding to this pressure, G42 shifted its strategy in early 2024, divesting from its earlier China investments and announcing it would no longer maintain a physical presence there.
In the wake of these changes, Microsoft—one of OpenAI’s key partners—stepped in with a $1.5 billion investment in G42, with its president Brad Smith joining the company’s board. This move underscores the robust international backing behind OpenAI’s ambitious plans.
