OpenAI Transitions to GPT-5, Retiring Older Models from ChatGPT

August 8, 2025

OpenAI is streamlining your ChatGPT experience by shifting exclusively to its newest model, GPT-5. The move retires older versions like GPT-4o, o3, and several others, ensuring that every interaction benefits from the latest advancements.

A company spokesperson explained to VentureBeat that this change cuts through the confusion of choosing between different models. With GPT-5 in charge, you no longer need to worry about which version fits your task best. Enterprise and Education users, however, will retain access to older models for an extra 60 days, providing some breathing room during the transition.

Not everyone is thrilled about the update. For instance, Harry Horsperg fondly recalls GPT-4.5’s prowess with textual and conceptual analysis, highlighting that it’s hard to replace favoured tools. Some users also found the closing chapter—where GPT-4o was asked to write its own eulogy—a tad insensitive.

Yet, this streamlining comes after consistent feedback that having multiple model options was more of a hindrance than a help. CEO Sam Altman’s promise to simplify the user experience is now coming to fruition with a unified approach under GPT-5. Meanwhile, organisations relying on the API can carry on with their established workflows as OpenAI maintains support for legacy models in that space.

If you’ve ever grappled with adapting to new technology, this shift might feel challenging at first. However, the transition underscores OpenAI’s commitment to optimising performance, ensuring that you always access the most capable tool available.
