OpenAI’s Image Generator: Now Available for Everyone

April 2, 2025

Exciting news from OpenAI! Their advanced image generator, powered by the impressive GPT-4o model, is now open to all users. Previously, this tool was a perk for ChatGPT’s premium subscribers. However, if you’re using the free tier, the details on how much you can use it are still a bit hazy. CEO Sam Altman hinted there might be a limit of three images per day.

Since its launch, the image generator has really taken off. Altman even mentioned that the demand was so high, it put a strain on their GPUs. It’s not all smooth sailing, though. The tool has stirred up some controversy, especially with its ability to mimic the iconic style of Studio Ghibli, which raises some copyright questions about the data it was trained on.

Interestingly, people are getting creative with the generator, using it for things like making fake receipts. OpenAI is on top of these issues, ensuring every image comes with metadata for traceability and enforcing strict adherence to their guidelines.

In a major milestone, OpenAI has secured a whopping $40 billion in funding from SoftBank, boosting the company’s valuation to $300 billion. This announcement comes just as ChatGPT celebrates reaching 500 million weekly active users and 700 million monthly active users.
