SingHealth and Duke-NUS Team Up to Transform Healthcare with AI

March 25, 2025

Imagine a world where artificial intelligence seamlessly integrates into healthcare, making medical processes more efficient and effective. Well, that future is becoming a reality. SingHealth has joined forces with Duke-NUS Medical School to launch the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Institute (AIMI). This groundbreaking initiative is part of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre and is set to change how we think about AI in healthcare research, education, and commercialization.

AIMI’s mission is to empower healthcare professionals with AI-driven tools, offering essential resources, grants, and expertise from both local and global experts. This will help move research from the lab to the bedside more efficiently. The institute is also dedicated to creating governance frameworks to ensure AI is used responsibly, with ethical data handling practices at the forefront.

One of AIMI’s key goals is to support the commercialization of AI innovations. This means helping startups grow and encouraging international collaborations. Education is also a big part of their mission. AIMI plans to roll out training programs, mentorships, and conferences to boost understanding of AI in healthcare, not just among professionals, but also the general public. An online series is coming soon to provide foundational insights into AI applications in healthcare, highlighting the unique challenges and opportunities in this field.

Liu Nan, an associate professor at Duke-NUS Medical School and co-director of AIMI, puts it well: “Beyond technology, we aim to cultivate future leaders who will drive AI advancements through strategic collaborations and education.” It’s about building a community of innovators ready to harness AI’s potential.

In a recent development, SingHealth signed an agreement with Royal Philips to integrate AI into digital imaging, data analytics, and smart ICU projects. On top of that, their collaboration with the U.S.-based Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) marks their first international partnership aimed at developing guidelines and best practices for responsible AI use in healthcare. This partnership will produce white papers, policy recommendations, and host a global summit in Singapore, bringing together stakeholders to discuss AI governance and ethics.

As the healthcare landscape evolves, initiatives like AIMI are crucial in ensuring that AI is used effectively and ethically. By fostering innovation and collaboration, we’re not just talking about the future of healthcare—we’re actively shaping it.
