Skyrora Achieves Historic Milestone with the UK’s First Commercial Space Launch Licence

August 5, 2025

Skyrora has marked a major milestone for the UK’s space sector by becoming the first homegrown manufacturer to secure a commercial space launch licence from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). This licence not only paves the way for launching the suborbital Skylark L rocket from British soil, but also reinforces the country’s push to build sovereign launch capabilities that reduce reliance on overseas services.

Volodymyr Levykin, Skyrora’s CEO, summed it up perfectly when he said, “Becoming the first homegrown company in the UK to receive a launch operator licence is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone at Skyrora.” His comments remind us that when industry and regulators work hand in hand, long-term challenges can be overcome.

The Skylark L is no small feat on its own. Standing 11 metres tall and capable of carrying payloads up to 50kg beyond the Kármán line (the recognized boundary of space), it’s powered by a clean-burning 30kN bipropellant engine and incorporates advanced 3D-printed components. Originally developed to test technology for Skyrora’s planned orbital vehicle, the Skyrora XL, it’s also carving out a niche in microgravity research by offering an affordable alternative to full orbital missions.

Even though a 2022 launch attempt in Iceland didn’t hit every target, the practical insights gained have been invaluable. This learn-as-you-go approach has not only accelerated further improvements but also positioned Skyrora at the cutting edge of the rapidly evolving UK space scene.

Based in Scotland, Skyrora is now collaborating with spaceports, regulators, and industry partners to build a reliable commercial launch programme. Their progress is a win for regional economic growth and helps cement the UK’s reputation as a serious player in the global space economy.
