Switch expands its presence with innovative AI factories in Las Vegas

July 5, 2025

Switch, a leading data centre operator based in Las Vegas, is broadening its footprint in Southern Nevada by developing compact yet powerful AI facilities—what the company calls its new ‘AI factories.’ Situated at the Jones Boulevard-215 Beltway intersection near its existing data centre hub, these facilities include a 199,000-square-foot data centre warehouse alongside an additional 228,000-square-foot unit. Construction is well under way, paving the way for enhanced AI processing capabilities.

Jason Hoffman, the company’s Chief Strategy Officer, shared with the Las Vegas Review-Journal that these AI factories stand apart from conventional data centres with their significantly higher computing density. While typical centres store client data, these new facilities are tailor-made for the demanding tasks of artificial intelligence systems. This venture marks Switch’s first AI factory in Las Vegas, with plans for similar projects across the country.

Under the leadership of CEO Rob Roy, Switch has grown its portfolio to include data centres in Nevada, Texas, Michigan, and Georgia. In 2022, the company was acquired for roughly $11 billion by two investment firms. Hoffman also noted that the design of these AI factories draws inspiration from industry leader Nvidia, whose innovative approach under CEO Jensen Huang has seen profits soar dramatically from $4.4 billion to nearly $72.9 billion over just two years.

Nvidia describes its own AI factories as centres that manage the entire process—from data ingestion and training to fine-tuning and high-volume inference—essentially manufacturing intelligence at scale. Such investments highlight the sector’s shift towards specialised infrastructure that meets the unique demands of contemporary AI applications.
