MBR UV-C Light Products has unveiled a groundbreaking handheld device that’s battery-powered and swiftly disinfects surfaces, wiping out germs in less than ten seconds. In the wake of COVID-19, the need for thorough cleaning routines has skyrocketed, particularly in public areas where unseen dangers like MRSA and C. difficile lurk. Traditional chemical cleaners often fall short against these tough superbugs. MBR, based in the UK, is at the forefront of UV-C light disinfection. They harness a specific wavelength of 253.7nm to break down the DNA of harmful germs, stopping their spread. Since 2009, MBR has been leading the way in offering portable UV-C devices across various industries.
The company’s journey began with a personal story. Founder Rose Latchman-Bloom was driven to start the company after her husband contracted an E-coli infection during a hospital stay. She shares, “I promised the doctor he wouldn’t die. I went to the hospital and nursed him back to health myself.” Seeing the gaps in cleaning practices, she looked into technologies that could enhance standard cleaning methods for thorough germ elimination.
Their flagship product, the UV-C Miracle Wand, showed a 99% kill rate of pathogens in just 20 seconds during lab tests. It’s been a hit in commercial kitchens and hospitality sectors, which led Rose to introduce it to hospitals, where she initially met some resistance. “The first hospital I approached was the one where my husband got E-coli,” Rose recalls. “I realized I needed to educate people…”
The next version, the UV-C Handheld Sanitiser®, builds on its predecessor’s strengths, achieving a 99.9999% germ kill rate in under ten seconds. This portable unit is designed for quick disinfection in various settings, from offices to restaurants to healthcare facilities. Rose emphasizes, “My goal when designing our products was to make them affordable and suitable for every setting…”
Launched just before the COVID-19 pandemic, the product quickly gained attention. Rose recounts, “When COVID happened, I was asked if the product killed SARS-CoV-2… It achieved a 99% kill rate in just over a second.” The pandemic highlighted the effectiveness of UV-C technology worldwide, sparking widespread interest from different sectors.
