Ever found yourself questioning whether the news you get is truly balanced? Truth Social’s latest AI chatbot, Truth Search AI, is sparking that very debate. Developed by Trump Media & Technology Group and powered by Perplexity AI, the system has come under scrutiny for its heavy reliance on conservative media sources.
Despite prompting users to explore a range of news outlets, the chatbot tends to point mainly to Fox News, Fox Business, The Washington Times, and similar conservative platforms. WIRED’s investigation uncovered that even when the questions aren’t politically charged, the chatbot doubles down on these sources.
A representative from Perplexity AI mentioned that this selective sourcing is the result of customised “source selection”, designed to resonate with specific audiences. However, the promise of balanced reporting doesn’t line up with the consistent conservative slant the chatbot displays.
There’s an interesting twist too. Although the bot manages to maintain a somewhat neutral stance on matters like the 2020 election and immigration, its source choices remain markedly conservative. Its description of the link between Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein as merely ‘tenuous’ is another clear example of its selective curation.
If you’ve ever wrestled with the challenge of sorting through biased information, this serves as a timely reminder: the choice of news sources matters, especially in our increasingly tech-driven media landscape.
