On a recent podcast titled “What Is an AI Agent?”, a panel of a16z infrastructure partners—Guido Appenzeller, Matt Bornstein, and Yoko Li—explored this very question. They discussed how the simplest form of an agent might just be a clever prompt built on a robust knowledge base, like an automated IT help desk. Yet, as many companies claim, some are pitching these agents as near-complete replacements for human workers—a leap that currently demands capabilities far beyond what today’s AI can deliver.
Jaspar Carmichael-Jack, CEO of sales AI firm Artisan, shared his hands-on experiences with the challenges of developing truly reliable AI agents. Despite efforts to cut the human element entirely, practical hurdles like ensuring consistent memory retention and minimising hallucinations mean that people remain very much part of the equation.
During the discussion, Yoko Li elaborated on what distinguishes a genuine AI agent: a system equipped with multi-step reasoning, a dynamic decision tree, and the capacity for autonomous task execution. While such agents may eventually take over some routine operations, the VCs agree that the creative input and nuanced problem-solving of human teams are irreplaceable at this stage.
