Leidos and University of Pittsburgh Team Up to Transform Healthcare with AI

April 24, 2025

Leidos and the University of Pittsburgh are joining forces to harness the incredible potential of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Announced this past Friday, this exciting partnership is all about speeding up AI innovations in medicine by investing a substantial $10 million into the university. This move adds to the $37 million Leidos has already contributed over nearly 20 years, marking a significant chapter in their long-standing relationship.

Liz Porter, who leads Leidos’ Health & Civil Sector, shared her enthusiasm about this collaboration. She said, “One of the things we’re excited about with this partnership is that the University of Pittsburgh and ourselves are not starting from scratch. We see this as the initial entry point into where we’re going to go with artificial intelligence.” It’s clear they’re building on a strong foundation.

This five-year partnership is set to boost the capabilities of Pitt’s CPACE team, paving the way for co-developing products with Leidos. The innovative solutions they create could make a big difference in early detection and diagnosis of diseases like cancer, ultimately aiming to provide smarter and more equitable healthcare.

What’s particularly inspiring about this project is its focus on improving care for military families and veterans, especially those in rural areas. Plus, they’re looking at how these AI solutions can be deployed globally. As Porter puts it, “It’s about delivering smarter and more equitable care.”

Part of the investment will go towards expanding Pitt’s Digital Pathology Research Center, with the ultimate goal of making personalized medicine accessible to everyone. This collaboration is also expected to help reduce healthcare costs over time, integrating AI into workforce development strategies.

Leidos and Pitt are optimistic about what this partnership can achieve. Porter hinted at rapid advancements, saying, “Keep your seatbelts on, because there’s a lot more to come.” This alliance reflects a shared vision of using AI to revolutionize healthcare delivery both locally and worldwide.
