Cybersecurity isn’t what it used to be, and if you’re not keeping a close eye on your AI tools, you might be inviting trouble. A recent IBM report reveals that 16% of data breaches last year involved AI applications, with 20% of organisations suffering breaches due to unauthorised AI tool use on their systems. What’s more, 97% of these groups lacked access controls and 63% were missing a proper AI governance policy.
Suja Viswesan, IBM’s VP of Security, explained that there’s already a clear gap between AI adoption and the oversight required to secure it – a gap that cyber criminals are beginning to exploit. In the United States, the average cost of a data breach now stands at $10.22 million, with healthcare breaches averaging $7.42 million, though globally, the figure has dipped to $4.44 million. Interestingly, the time it takes to detect a breach has shortened to 241 days, largely thanks to the quicker detection capabilities of AI monitoring.
If you’ve ever struggled to balance innovation with security, you’re not alone. This is a clear signal that as we integrate AI deeper into our operations, we must also strengthen our oversight to keep pace with evolving threats.
