AI’s Growing Role in the Job Market: A New Challenge for Recent Grads

July 12, 2025

Generative AI is reshaping the job landscape in ways you might not have expected. Recent graduates are now facing tighter entry-level opportunities as AI takes over many routine tasks. Handshake, a platform for Gen Z job seekers, reveals that entry-level corporate roles have dropped by 15%, while applications per job have surged by 30%.

Doug Calidas from Americans for Responsible Innovation shares early signs of this shift. He points out that although many graduates are still securing work, the overall job prospects have taken a hit. For instance, as of March, the unemployment rate for degree holders aged 22 to 27 reached 5.8%, notably above the national average of 4%, according to the New York Federal Reserve.

If you’ve ever felt let down after years of study and hard work, Michael Macaluso’s story might resonate with you. A recent mechanical engineering graduate, Michael applied to around 200 jobs before landing a post as an assistant pool director in his hometown of Eastchester, New York. Many were promised immediate opportunities post-graduation, so when reality shifts, it understandably stings.

With AI stepping in to manage repetitive tasks, entry-level roles are evolving. Christine Cruzvergara from Handshake advises that graduates should get to grips with AI technology as it becomes an integral part of modern workplaces. In fact, job listings mentioning AI have increased by 400% over the past two years. Meanwhile, research highlighted by Liya Palagashvili from George Mason University shows a growing demand for high-skilled jobs, even as positions requiring less education see a decline.

Historically, technology has both phased out old roles and created new opportunities. Doug Calidas even suggests that it might be time to rethink the traditional push towards white-collar jobs and consider trades, which often don’t demand a hefty college investment. As the market shifts, staying adaptable and continuously updating your skills could be your best strategy for long-term success.
