Overland AI powers military missions with autonomous ground vehicles

At the U.S. Army’s Project Convergence Capstone 5, Overland AI demonstrated its cutting-edge autonomous ground vehicle technology, marking a significant step forward in military operations. Founded in Seattle in 2022, the company has integrated its OverDrive software and SPARK hardware into General Dynamics’ Small Multipurpose Equipment Transport (SMET) vehicles. These vehicles now operate independently, without relying on GPS or direct human control.

The demonstration, carried out alongside the Sandhills Project and the 20th Engineer Brigade, showcased how Overland’s systems perform in complex military settings. Soldiers from the 27th Engineer Battalion received training to manage these autonomous platforms on their own, highlighting the practical benefit of keeping personnel out of harm’s way during risky missions.

Byron Boots, Overland AI’s CEO, reflected on the exercise: “Soldiers independently and successfully operated our ground autonomy for two straight weeks during Project Convergence Capstone 5. Our breaching exercises show just how mature this technology has become and the clear tactical advantage of removing humans from some of the most dangerous tasks.” This hands-on experience confirms the readiness of Overland’s solutions to support frontline operations.

The SMET vehicles, enhanced by Overland’s OverDrive and SPARK technologies, can carry loads up to 1,000 pounds, reach speeds of 35 mph, and cover distances up to 100 miles. These capabilities stem from Overland’s decade of research in robotics and machine learning, aimed at empowering modern defence forces with reliable autonomy.

Adding to their versatility, these vehicles can be equipped with extra payloads like mine-clearing unmanned aerial systems and drone launchers. This flexibility opens up a range of military applications, from reconnaissance to breaching operations. Overland AI’s partnership with the U.S. Army is backed by an $18.6 million contract to develop software for the Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) programme, signalling strong institutional support for advancing ground autonomy.
