BYD’s New EV Charging Tech: As Fast as Filling Up with Gas

March 18, 2025

BYD, a name you might already know as a leader in the electric vehicle world, has just dropped some exciting news. They’ve unveiled a new charging system that could change the way we think about EVs. Imagine charging your car almost as quickly as filling up a gas tank. That’s what BYD is promising with their latest innovation.

After this big reveal, BYD’s stock in Hong Kong shot up by more than 6%, reaching HK$408 before settling at HK$399.60. By midday, it was still up by 3.6%. If you’ve been watching their stock, you’ll know it’s been on a roll, climbing 55% this year alone.

So, what’s all the buzz about? At a live event from their headquarters in Shenzhen, BYD introduced the Super e-Platform. This isn’t just any charging system—it’s capable of delivering a whopping 1 megawatt of power. To put that in perspective, that’s 1,000 kilowatts. According to Wang Chuanfu, who’s not just the founder but also the chairman and CEO, this tech can give your vehicle a 400-kilometer range in just five minutes. For those of us who’ve felt that twinge of anxiety waiting for a charge, this could be a game-changer.

Initially, you’ll see this tech in two of BYD’s models: the Han L sedan and the Tang L SUV, starting at about 270,000 yuan (or roughly US$37,324). To make this even more accessible, BYD plans to roll out over 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China. They haven’t shared the exact timeline or investment details yet, but it’s a promising start.

What’s really groundbreaking here is that this is the first time a charging system has hit the 1MW mark. That’s double the power of Tesla’s superchargers, which max out at 500kW and offer up to 275 kilometers of range in 15 minutes.

For those of you considering the switch to electric, or already driving an EV, this could make your experience a whole lot smoother. It’s an exciting time for the EV industry, and BYD is certainly leading the charge.
