Belfast has rolled out a forward-thinking hub that places the UK at the forefront of digital twin technology. The new UK Digital Twin Centre turns data into dynamic virtual models, mirroring real-world operations to help you optimise everything from supply chains to complex engineering systems. Supported by Innovate UK and the Belfast Region City Deal, this initiative is set to boost industrial innovation and sustainability while unlocking notable economic value over the coming decade.
Lord Mayor Councillor Micky Murray highlighted the Centre’s potential by saying it’s a major stride for Belfast. He noted that, through robust networks linked by the Belfast Region City Deal and Digital Catapult’s nationwide reach, local SMEs can access new markets, form valuable partnerships, and tap into cutting-edge technologies.
Digital twin technology creates real-time, data-driven models of physical assets, systems, or processes. This hands-on approach lets businesses test, predict, and fine-tune performance without the need for costly trial and error. Without exaggeration, it’s a smart tool to improve efficiency and drive down costs.
At the Centre’s launch, leading partners including Artemis Technologies, Spirit AeroSystems, and Thales UK showcased early-stage applications in a 360-degree immersive space and a high-tech lab. These demonstrations addressed challenges in maritime, aerospace, and defence, while underlining the importance of cross-sector collaboration in strengthening supply chains, enhancing product design, and supporting decarbonisation efforts.
The UK Digital Twin Centre isn’t just about innovation—it’s about making digital twin technology accessible. Its six core technology areas—intelligence, data services, immersive and user experience, cyber-physical systems, integration, and security—lay the foundation for scalable, interoperable solutions that work across different industries.

This initiative offers funding, mentorship, and technical support to help you integrate enabling technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT), simulation tools, and data integration into your operations.
Susan Bowen, CEO of Digital Catapult, pointed out that the real-world use cases emerging at the Centre are a strong indicator of the tangible advances digital twins can offer to sectors such as aerospace, maritime, and defence. She believes that by harnessing Belfast’s deep expertise in digital technologies and advanced manufacturing, the project will energise economic growth both in Northern Ireland and across the entire UK.
