Anthropic restricts Claude 3.x on Windsurf as OpenAI acquisition plans stir rivalry

June 4, 2025

OpenAI’s reported plan to acquire Windsurf has set off a chain reaction. Anthropic has swiftly curtailed access to its Claude 3.x models on the platform, affecting Claude 3.5 Sonnet, 3.7 Sonnet, and 3.7 Sonnet Thinking. Now, Windsurf users—whether on free or Pro trials—can only reach these models via a bring‑your‑own‑key system, with limited capacity available through third‐party providers. Even though Claude Sonnet 4 remains accessible through BYOK, the sudden change has left many wondering about the impact on productivity.

To ease the transition, Windsurf is offering its Gemini 2.5 Pro model at a discount as a robust alternative, while also affirming its willingness to pay for Anthropic’s capabilities. As Windsurf defends its long-standing strengths in AI-driven code generation and a user-friendly interface, critics argue that the quality of the AI model ultimately determines success. With industry concerns over the potential cross‑platform data flow as Anthropic looks to shield its models from an OpenAI‑backed rival, both users and competitors are keeping a close eye on these rapid shifts.
