Google is bolstering its AI expertise with a fresh injection of talent. The tech giant recently welcomed Varun Mohan, co-founder and CEO of Windsurf—a startup known for its innovative approach to vibe coding—into its fold. Although Google isn’t investing directly in Windsurf, it has secured a nonexclusive licence for key technologies, highlighting its commitment to maintaining an edge in a competitive landscape.
Windsurf, which was once in talks with OpenAI over a US $3 billion deal, is now making a significant mark as part of Google DeepMind. Along with Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen will also join Google, while the remainder of the Windsurf team continues to enhance their platform. A Google spokesperson noted, “We’re excited to welcome some top AI coding talent from Windsurf’s team to Google DeepMind to advance our work in agentic coding.”
This move comes at a time when the race for AI talent is intensifying. Meta, for example, is making bold moves by recruiting key figures like Alexandr Wang from Scale AI, supported by a $14.3 billion investment in its AI initiatives. Other tech giants, including Amazon and Microsoft, are similarly expanding their AI capabilities—with Microsoft even integrating AI into its Visual Studio Code to improve its development process.
